Cappy's Pizza in Winthrop Pleases

The fourth franchise in the Tampa Bay area is most welcome to Riverview.

The newest addition to Riverview's constantly growing pizza mecca is , 6260 Winthrop Town Centre Ave., located at Providence and Bloomingdale Avenue.

Cappy's may be the new kid on the block, but it has certainly brought its own special list of quirks to be dealt with. For one, it's only open from 5-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 5-10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. No lunch crowd and no late-night crowds.

"Better be good pizza," I thought on my way home, and I was right. The crust was good and hand tossed, with just the right amount of air cooked into the dough. The mozzarella wasn't the usual dried-out stuff that some places use to cover their pies. It was fresh and had that oily texture you get when the fats inside the cheese come to the surface while cooking. A friend of mine refers to it as "flubbery" cheese, but that's a misconception. It has simply reached its maximum potential for gooeyness, and I'm taking credit for coining that phrase.

The sauce was spot on as far as I'm concerned, but I like my pizza a little less wet than most people. My wife likes hers dripping in tomato sauce, so I usually get the little sides of marinara they put out with calzones for her. I had some marinara leftover from my last cooking venture in my kitchen, so she was happy with her dinner, as was my daughter. The pepperoni was a little spicier than I'm used to but very tasty. It had to be hand cut on site, as there were various thicknesses in the meat slices.

The menu is very limited but at the same time offers the best of both worlds. Whether you prefer the deep dish Chicago-style pizza with all the saucey goodness or the thin crust New York style or the hand tossed, they're all offered at Cappy's and are reasonably priced.

The toppings cover all the usual meats plus a few vegetarian items not usually seen on pizzas, such as artichoke hearts, broccoli, green olives and sun-dried tomatoes, to name a few.

Greek, Caesar and tossed salads are available to give you a wide range for the veggie lover that exists in all of us — even us carnivores.

I'm giving these guys three and a half stars for the quality of the food and will be going back.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Cappy's did not accept credit cards. The story has been changed to reflect the correct information.
