Drawing Point Offers Classes for Elderly

Owner Bob Carter says creative activities can reduce depression among elderly.

The owner of The Drawing Point, a home-based art studio, is now offering classes for the elderly and those suffering from mental disorders.

"The power of creativity is healthy," said Bob Carter, artist and owner of The Drawing Point, based in Valrico. "Creativity brings refreshment, vigor, health and connection to individuals. Creativity with its many forms are boundless."

Carter says the elderly and those suffering from mental disorders can especially benefit through art classes.

"The art of drawing has been shown to reduce depression and isolation," he said. "People with physical or mental challenges or other factors have reported improved moods and self-esteem through art.

"Many elderly are at a point in their life when circumstances can cause complex emotions, challenges and adjustments to their daily living," said Carter. "Art can be a great outlet and vehicle of expression. For seniors, using art to communicate and to process the complex events in their life opens a new window to the world."

The Drawing Point is now visiting local assisted living facilities in the greater Brandon area, giving residents a chance to express their creativity and discover the benefits of art.
