Lady Bulls Knock Off Tough Wildcat Team

Bloomingdale defeated Wharton on Tueday, 5-1 on the pitching performance of Lauren Phillips.

Bloomingdale (6-7-0, 4-1-0, first place, 6A Division 8) took a share of first place in the 6A conference after an impressive win against Wharton (6-4-0, 2-3-0, fourth place, 6A Division 8) on Tuesday night.

In recent games, a growing area of concentration has focused itself on the arms of the Lady Bulls pitching staff. Prior to Tuesday's game, Bloomingdale had given up 73 runs on defense and posted an ERA of 4.32.

After retiring 17 straight batters in Fridays win against Alonso, junior Lauren Phillips continued her dominance on the mound in the Bulls 5-1 win against the Wildcats. With her performance, Bloomingdale may have found its pitcher of the future.

Phillips, with her second straight win, shut down the run-scoring machine of Wharton with a stat line that any major league pitcher would be proud of. In seven innings, Phillips struck out one, gave up only six hits and surrendered a .222 BA against a Wildcat team averaging .374 for the season.

While the Lady Bulls pitching kept the game in check, it was the bats of the ladies from Bloomingdale that kept the game out of reach.

After posting two scoreless innings, Bloomingdale added 2 runs in the third and fourth innings off of very timely hitting. The slim 2-0 Bull lead would hold together as they would score 3 runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away for good, 5-1.

Led by Marlie Braddy, who went 2-for-4 with two runs; the Lady Bulls totaled 12 hits while batting .375 against tough Wharton pitching.

Four separate Bull players had two or more hits in Tuesday's game: Katie Marion, Leah Pemberton, Braddy and Jordan Alexander (Alexander also had two stolen bases on the night).

With Friday's win, Bloomingdale is in the driver's seat in the 6A Conference. Plant (4-5-0, 4-1-0, 6A District 8) posts an impressive conference record of 4-1-0 despite losing five total games. Plant holds the tie-breaker over Bloomingdale with a win in their first meeting in early March. Plant and Bloomingdale will play again on March 25 and 29 for possible district bragging rights.

Bloomingdale will travel to Gibsonton on Thursday to play East Bay at 7 p.m.
