ALBANY, GEORGIA — A Bradenton man wanted in a March 8 shooting that left one man dead and another injured has been arrested in Georgia.

Maurice McCary, 35, was taken into custody on Tuesday in Albany, and “is no longer on the run,” the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

McCary eluded arrest for nearly four months before deputies received a tip about his location. He was found hiding under a bed, investigators said.

The investigation began early March 8 after patrol deputies in Bradenton heard multiple gunshots in the 5200 block of 14th Street West around 3:30 a.m.

Deputies found a white vehicle in the roadway surrounded by spent shell casings and two adult men inside suffering from gunshot wounds.

One victim, 27-year-old Jamari Murray-Barnes, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

The injured man, De'Ryan Lopez, 22, was brought to a local hospital and survived.

On March 13, detectives with the Manatee Homicide Investigation Unit obtained an arrest warrant charging McCary with second-degree murder in Murray-Barnes’ death, the sheriff’s office said. The agency said additional charges were pending for the shooting of Lopez.

Investigators learned that Murray-Barnes and Lopez were stopped at a traffic light at 14th Street W. (U.S. 41) and 53rd Avenue West when McCary pulled his vehicle alongside theirs and fired multiple shots into the car.

Detectives believed the shooting stemmed from an altercation involving the men at a local bar days earlier on March 6.

As McCary remained at large in the months that followed, the sheriff’s office and partner organizations announced reward offers that rose from up to $9,500 to a combined total of $14,500 for information leading to his arrest.

Following his arrest in Georgia, McCary will be extradited to Manatee County.
