Bradenton Police Disperse Riverwalk 'Teen Takeover' Crowd

Bradenton police said 250 to 300 young people gathered along the Riverwalk, and officers shut two areas as the crowd dispersed.

BRADENTON, FL — Officers broke up a planned “teen takeover” along the Riverwalk on Saturday night after learning about it in advance, Bradenton police said in a news release.

After learning about the planned event, police increased staffing and patrols in the area ahead of time.

"We'll say it again: the 'teen takeover' trend is not acceptable. We will not tolerate disruptions to businesses, parks, the Riverwalk, or traffic,” police said.

When between 150 and 300 young people gathered at Riverwalk, officers temporarily closed Rossie Park and the Skate Park, and the crowd dispersed, police said.

Some members of the group crossed busy roadways and tried to gather near gas stations and other businesses.

With assistance from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, officers prevented the group from entering or overtaking those businesses, police said.

The crowd eventually fully dispersed without any serious incidents.

"While no major incidents occurred, this type of behavior creates unnecessary safety risks for everyone involved and will not be tolerated,” police said. "Parents: Please know where your teens are, know who they're with, and talk with them about making good decisions. A night out with friends shouldn't end with someone getting hurt — or worse.”
