Sports

Athlete Of The Week: Hailey Dearlove, Bradenton Christian Softball

The sophomore two-sport athlete pitched a no-hitter in the Lady Panthers' 7-1 victory over previously undefeated Hernando Christian in the Class 1A-District 8 championship game.

Besides softball, what other sports do you play?: I play basketball. I'm the point guard (for the Bradenton Christian team).

How old were you when you started playing each sport?: Oh gosh, I was 4 or 5. I don't know. I grew up with (softball and basketball). My mom (Julie) pitched in college, and she also played basketball. My dad (Keith) is really competitive and he played basketball, too. (Basketball) is something that is part of the family. My brother (Justin) and sister (Heather) played (basketball at BCS). It's just normal for us.

Would you like to play one or both sports at the college level?: I don't know yet.

What you would like study in college?: That's undecided. Right now, I just seek God and see what he wants me to do because there are so many different options, and so many people change their majors. I want to go to college knowing that this is what God wants me to do.

How long have you attended Bradenton Christian School?: I came here in sixth grade. I went to the elementary school on (Anna Maria Island).

What is it that you like the most about BCS?: I definitely like the community and the family feeling. Everybody here is a good and genuine person. If I was a parent, I would like to send my kid here because of the atmosphere. I have great friends. I couldn't ask for any better friends. It's just a great school.

What is your favorite school subject?: Bible. We have really good Bible teachers here. You ask them any question and they know it. Not just knowing it and jabbing it down your throat either, they take their time because they know that you really care about it. I don't know. I just love my Bible classes.

How does it feel to play on two state playoff teams in the same school year?: It's a great feeling. It's awesome, but it was a lot of hard work that definitely paid off.

Who's your role model?: Different people have influenced me in different ways, so I can't just pick a specific one. All of them have contributed.

In addition to sports, what do you like to do in your free time?: I hang out with my friends a lot. They're just good influences and really good people. I'm really involved with my youth group. Besides that, homework. I don't have too much free time because (teachers) take care of that.
