Bicyclist Killed In U.S. 301 Crash: FL Highway Patrol

A Sarasota bicyclist was hit by a car on U.S. 301 in Ellenton Saturday night, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

ELLENTON, FL — A Sarasota bicyclist was killed after being hit by a car on U.S. 301 in Ellenton Saturday night, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The crash happened near Palm Avenue just before 10 p.m. The car, driven by a 32-year-old Ellenton man, was traveling west in the inside lane of U.S. 301, approaching the driveway access of 3410 U.S. 301, the agency said.

At the same time, a 60-year-old man was riding his bicycle south across the westbound lanes of U.S. 301 and rode in front of the approaching car, FHP said.

The bicyclist was brought to an area hospital with critical injuries and later pronounced dead.

The driver was uninjured in the crash, which remains under investigation.
