LRHS students enjoy quick trip to Cuba (really!)

Kaleigh Dean - LRHS News

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) - On Friday, April 26 LRHS Spanish teacher Lillian Martinez and her Spanish 4 students hopped on a bus and took a field trip to the melting pot of Spanish history, Tampa's Ybor City.

While in Tampa, they took a walking trip around the city, were introduced to a museum of immigration history, visited the park of Cuban Independence Leader Jose Marti, ate lunch at the world-famous Colombia Restaurant and lastly watched a Spanish flamenco dance.

The Marti park has actually been a part of Cuban soil since 1956, thanks to a long series of complicated land sales dating back to the late 1800s.

"When I tell students we are taking a trip to Cuba… In a sense we are because there is a little piece of original Cuban sand in the museum" said Martinez.

Martinez also explained to the students how crucial Florida was for Spanish immigrants and growing tobacco crops.

Over 40 students went on the trip, arriving at the school around 3 p.m.
