Prospect Riding Center Rekindles Memories of a Snowy Winter Night

I still cherish the quiet times that only exist between a human and an animal.

It was one of those frigid winter nights in Michigan and already a few inches of freshly fallen snow blanketed our farm. With a family of seven, our house often felt way too small, and when I could no longer stand the company of my sisters I would often retreat to the barn where our pony, Lady, resided.

That night I found her standing in the area adjacent to the barn. When I went over to sit on the fence, she came over to keep me company. Even though it was quite cold out that night it was also very beautiful, with big fluffy flakes still falling from the sky. So for probably half an hour that is where I sat telling all my problems to Lady, who listened so intently and gave me her unconditional love and approval.

Now as an adult, living in Florida, I still cherish the quiet times that only exist between a human and an animal. I have been able to recapture that feeling whenever I visit the Prospect Riding Center, where I am a volunteer. Once again I'm that little girl, one on one, with an animal. When you are there working with the horses or the mules they have your undivided attention and nothing else matters.
