Bradenton Golfer Qualifies for U.S. Open

19-year-old Cheng-tsung Pan, an IMG Academies product, earns a spot in one of the sport's most prestigious events.

Cheng-tsung Pan recently graduated from The Pendleton School in Bradenton and is headed to the University of Washington in the fall on a golf scholarship.

In between, he'll be competing in the U.S. Open.

Pan, a product of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy at , was one of four golfers to earn a spot in one of golf's premier events at Monday's U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier in Summit, N.J., the Newark Star-Ledger reports.

The 19-year-old, originally from Taiwan, shot rounds of 72 and 66 on the North and South courses at Canoe Brook Country Club. His 5-under total of 138 was good for a three-way tie for second place behind medalist Geoffrey Sisk of Massachussetts.

Pan was tied for the first-round lead and topped the leaderboard for most of the day before bogeying two of his final three holes.

“I was trying to play as normal as I can,” he told the Star-Ledger. “Don’t feel any pressure and just trying to do my best.”

Now he'll have a chance to play some of the world's best at the U.S. Open, which begins June 13 at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.
