Bradenton Woman Gets 18 Months For Collecting Dead Mom's Benefits

Tekia Middleton was sentenced to 18 months in prison and was ordered to pay $51,755 in restitution, according to court records.

TAMPA, FL—A woman who collected her dead mother's Social Security benefits for almost five years was sentenced to a year and a half in prison, the Bradenton Herald reports.

Court records show Tekia Middleton, 41, pleaded guilty in May to a charge of theft of government funds.

Last Friday, she was sentenced to 18 months in prison and was ordered to pay $51,755 in restitution, according to court records. When she is released from prison, Middleton will be on probation for three years.

The Herald reports Middleton did not inform the Social Security Administration of her mother's death in 2014 and used her mother's benefit money for her own expenses.
