Grandparents Overdose In Front Of Toddler At Bradenton Motel: Police

A child was taken into custody by Child Protective Services after grandparents overdosed in front of them at a Bradenton motel, police said.

BRADENTON, FL — A couple overdosed Saturday morning at a Bradenton motel while their 4-year-old grandchild was in the room, authorities said.

Officers responded to reports of two possible drug overdoses at the motel located in the 1400 block of 14th Street West around 10:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Bradenton Police Department.

Motel staff providing room service found the 51-year-old man and 46-year-old woman unconscious in their room with the child, who was unharmed, according to police.

A motel employee administered Narcan, which is used to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, to the woman, while EMS gave it to the man, BPD said.

Both adults were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital under the Marchman Act, which allows law enforcement to bring people under protective custody to their home, a hospital, or a licensed detoxification or addictions facility.

The child, who was identified as the couple’s grandchild, was taken into custody by a Child Protective Services investigator, police said.
