Does Manatee County Need a Water Park?

County Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to move ahead with plans to create the park, which could cost up to $20 million to build.

Manatee County may soon have its own water park, complete with a roller coaster, if developers come back with an idea that holds water with commissioners.

The County Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to put out requests for proposals to build a 20-acre water attraction at Tom Bennett Park, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reported.

The park, which would include a 20,000-square-foot wave pool, is estimated to cost about $20 million to build, the Bradenton Herald reported. If the project moves forward, it would operate as a for-profit with the county leasing the land to developers.

Located at 400 Cypress Creek Blvd. in Bradenton, Bennett Park spans 200 acres. The park has a nature trail, fishing pier, playground with rope challenge and other amenities, according to the county’s website.

It is unclear at this time how soon the project might move forward, but Commissioner Larry Bustle said public meetings will be held to discuss the proposals. If constructed, the park would be considered a regional attraction.
