Europe Helps History Come Alive for SCF’s Study Abroad Program

Eight students from SCF discovered there's no place like Western Europe to make history come alive.

Students from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) discovered there’s no place like Western Europe to make history come alive. A group of eight students and two faculty members from SCF Venice headed to London, Paris, Florence and Rome to study European history as part of SCF’s summer semester study abroad program.

Students visited The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Basilica of Santa Croce, Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel and the Pantheon. Students in the Special Topics in Western Civilization class were required to keep journals of their 10-day trip documenting what they were learning and after returning were required to write a paper and do a class presentation.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to experience different cultures while learning about European history and Western Civilization,” said Michael Rogers, associate professor of history and politics. “It was truly an educational trip of a lifetime.”

The trip, in coordination with Education First College Study Tours, included daily field trips to historic monuments and museums and daily lectures from local and expert guides. The study abroad program was so successful this year, Rogers is planning a 10-day trip to London, Paris and Amsterdam for summer 2018.
