Florida Voters Want Pot Legalized, Poll Says

A large percentage of voters want medical marijuana legalized while a majority also think it's time to decriminalize recreational use.

Just because the last statewide vote to legalize medical marijuana use failed to nab the required 60 percent approval rate doesn’t mean the issue is dead in Florida voters’ minds.

A new poll released Monday by Quinnipiac University indicates that 84 percent of Sunshine State voters are in favor of legalizing marijuana use for those with medical needs. Another 55 percent of voters say they’d support making it legal for adults to possess small amounts of pot for personal use, too.

Monday’s poll results focused on 2016 presidential race swing states, which means not only Florida, but also Ohio and Pennsylvania. Voters in those other two states also overwhelmingly approve of the concept of legalizing medical marijuana while simple majorities also approved of legalized recreational use.

The Quinnipiac survey of Florida voters was conducted via telephone between March 17-28. A total of 1,087 self-identified registered voters were asked questions pertaining to their 2016 election choices along with questions related to the legalization of marijuana.
