Floridians Hip on Legalized Pot, Poll Finds

A new Quinnipiac University poll reveals a majority of Floridians favor legalized recreational use.

Florida voters would back a plan to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, but they favor medical use even more.

Those are the findings revealed in the latest Quinnipiac University poll. The Swing State Poll released Thursday shows that men are a little more hip on the notion of legalized recreational use than women. And, while the majority of respondents said they favored legalization, most insist they wouldn’t use marijuana should it become legal.

The Swing State Poll focuses on Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. No presidential candidate has managed to win since 1960 without at least taking two of these states. As the 2016 election draws closer, Quinnipiac is focusing on these three states heavily in regard to not only presidential politics, but also the politics of pot and other issues facing the country.

The latest poll was conducted between Sept. 25 and Oct. 5. A total of 1,173 Florida voters were surveyed, Quinnipiac reported.

As for those pot-related numbers, the poll found 51 percent of Florida voters favored recreational legalization. A total of 57 percent of men were for the idea with only 49 percent of women throwing their weight behind the concept. In regard to medical marijuana, however, 87 percent favor the idea.

When asked if they would use marijuana if it became legal in the Sunshine State, 65 percent of voters said “definitely not.”

A move to legalize medical marijuana fell short during the 2014 election. Supporters, however, are working to get the issue on the Florida ballot once more in 2016.
