Canes update: The Hurricanes are coming off an undefeated regular season and an appearance in the Class 5A state semifinals, where they last winter in Fort Lauderdale. They've also said goodbye to graduating brothers and defensive standouts Quinton and Chris Pompey, as well as star running back Mike Blakely, who made an early commitment to Florida but is now headed to Auburn. But the Canes return a bevy of talent, including highly touted defensive back Clinton Heaven and the Sandberg brothers, Cord (quarterback) and Chase (wide receiver), who've missed practice time this spring while leading the Manatee baseball team to its first state semifinal appearance since 1963.

The opponent: The Gladiators struggled to a 3-7 record last year before head coach Donnie Abraham, formerly of the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, resigned to take an assistant coaching position with the Tampa Bay Storm of the Arena Football League. New coach Antonio Knox will be without one of his best players, quarterback/running back Devontae White, who must sit out Friday's game because of transfer rules, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
