BRADENTON, FL — In response to allegations made against Bradenton police Chief Melanie Bevan, Mayor Gene Brown is recommending an independent investigation.

After an officer accused the chief of an unlawful search of a resident’s home in July, another four officers came forward with complaints, which included harassment and phone seizure.

“Two of these allegations specifically name (the Bradenton Police Department’s) internal affairs investigator and therefore would be a conflict,” Brown said in a news release.

Holder will focus on investigating Bevan. Florida law requires any law enforcement officer accused of misconduct, other than police chief, be investigated by a law enforcement agency, so Gregory will focus on accusations involving any sworn officers other than the chief, Brown said.

“In regards to the potential allegations against Chief Bevan, the affidavits are not well supported with direct statements or action by the chief,” Brown said. “However, these allegations will be thoroughly investigated, but I see no need to relieve Chief Bevan of her duties during this investigation.”

A spokesperson for the city said no other comments will be made until the investigation is finished.
