King of Horror to Headline Library Fundraiser

Part-time Sarasota resident Stephen King will appear at a January event to raise money for the Manatee County Public Library System.

The Manatee County Public Library System just got a horrific boost in its efforts to raise money to pay for a new operating system.

Part-time Sarasota County resident Stephen King has just signed on to appear at the Jan. 29 event at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, according to the Tampa Bay Business Journal. The fundraiser is meant to raise about $100,000 to upgrade the library’s operating system to make cataloging and other tasks easier.

Also known as the “King of Horror,” King is famed for penning such works as “Cujo,” “The Stand” and “Salem’s Lot.” He splits his time between a home in Maine and one in the Sarasota area.

“You have to literally be living under a rock not to know who this person is. It’s so exciting,” state Rep. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, was quoted by the Bradenton Herald as saying.

Tickets for the event, which takes place at the Manatee County Performing Arts Center, are expected to go on sale Nov. 1. King has agreed to speak for about an hour. Tickets will be available at the center’s box office and on the library foundation’s website, starting at $200 and going up to $10,000, the Business Journal reported.
