(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Last weekend the Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Raiders team won the state championship.

The team traveled to Sand Hill Scout Reservation in Brooksville where they competed in the Tier 1 division as a mixed team against 13 other regional champions from across the state.

This championship provided a challenging course layout, however the Mustang Raiders were still able to prevail through hard work and determination.

JROTC instructor Lt. Col. Richard Roller said, “This group of exceptional student athletes displayed determination and grit as they held off a strong field of competitors.”

The team participated in five events and placed third for the team run, first for the rope bridge, second for the tire flip, third for the cross-country rescue, and first for the raider fitness challenge.

The raider fitness challenge features a litter carry where the members carry weighted dummies while others ran with a 30-pound backpack for .5 miles. The team also participates in the team run where they run a 5k.

Mustang Raider Gino Tambe, junior, said, “It takes a lot of teamwork and working as a team to win the state championship.”

The LRHS Raiders practiced Monday through Friday for an hour and a half for almost five months to prepare for this competition.

After this state championship the raiders have spring season where the members practice twice a week and summer raiders where they practice two to three days a week to prepare for the fall season.

The LRHS Raiders Tier 1 Mixed Team has 14 members -
