Local students realize debt to vets

Despite it's origins nearly 100 years ago, local students still appreciate the meaning of Veterans Day.

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- When so many students have busy lives it, might be hard to sit down and think for a minute about what the importance of this upcoming Saturday, Nov. 11, is.

They may know that one, yes it is Veteran’s Day. However, do they know the importance of November 11?
Lakewood Ranch High School (LRHS) junior Bremen Clermont said, “My Grandpa is a veteran, it is a day to honor those who served our country.”

Many students at LRHS have active duty family members or have had a history of family members being a part of the armed forces. Junior Bradly Davis said, “It means history, most of my family were in wars.”

Other students felt passionate about how little the holiday is celebrated, and how many people do not take the time to honor our veterans.

LRHS junior Jaden Carter said, “Veterans Day is not celebrated as it should, nobody pays attention to it. It is an uncelebrated holiday to most people.”

Students in Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) are especially looking forward to honor veterans this Veterans Day. Senior Garth Bjurholm is in his fourth year of JROTC and is a first lieutenant. Bjurholm said, “It means a lot to me, it’s a day to respect the people who fought for us, if they didn’t sacrifice themselves we would not have the liberties we have today. We should all pay our respects to those who were willing to stand up and be brave for our country.”

Junior Cory Gonzalez is in his third year of JROTC and is a Sargent 1 class. Gonzalez said, “I participate in JROTC and plan on going into the military since my family has a history of being in the military, it is always important to respect our veterans.”

The true reason why we honor our veterans on Nov. 11 is because at 11:00 in the morning, on the 11 day of the 11 month of 1918, the First World War finally came to an end.
