Man Locked In Trunk During Hunt For Lost Keys

The Florida man had to be rescued by a deputy.

MARATHON, FL — When it rains, it pours. A 32-year-old Florida man reportedly found that out firsthand when a set of lost car keys created a domino effect that ultimately left him locked in his car trunk and slapped with a misdemeanor criminal charge.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 32-year-old Rob Moore decided to take an evening stroll on Sombrero Beach. All was well until Moore returned to his parked 1997 Lincoln Continental and realized he had lost his keys. Moore looked inside the car, left all the doors open, and then began searching in the trunk.

Somehow, he managed to fall inside the trunk, “which then closed, locking him inside,” a sheriff’s office report says.

Around 9:30 p.m., Deputy Seth Hopp received a call from dispatch about a suspicious vehicle parked at the beach. When Hopp responded, he had no trouble spotting the Lincoln with its doors wide open.

“As he approached the vehicle, he heard knocking coming from the trunk,” the report said. “Deputy Hopp announced himself as an deputy with the Sheriff’s Office and ordered the person in the trunk to come out.”

Moore, however, couldn’t comply with the order. After Hopp was made aware of the snafu, he let the man out, the report said.

As it turned out, Moore happened to have a small amount of marijuana in his open glove box and a small metal pipe, the report noted. Rather than haul him in, Hopp gave Moore a notice to appear in court.

It remains unclear just where the keys went.
