Marco Rubio to Introduce Romney at Republican National Convention

The Miami-born U.S. Senator had been seen as a possible running mate for GOP hopeful Mitt Romney, who instead tapped Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Florida's U.S. Senator Marco Rubio will introduce Mitt Romney Thursday, Aug. 30, to accept the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, GOP leaders said today.

Rubio, once considered a contender as Romney's running mate, will rally delegates at the four-day convention. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Congressman, will share the GOP ticket with Romney.

Florida is a battleground state in the presidential race. Rubio's support is seen as key in getting the Hispanic  vote.

In a written press release, RNC organizers noted that the introduction and speech will get huge viewership. Close to 39 million viewers watched Sen. John McCain's speech at the 2008 convention.

"Marco Rubio symbolizes the greatness of the American dream. He is the perfect leader to introduce Mitt Romney when he accepts his nomination," said Republican National Convention Chief Executive Officer William Harris.
