Myakka City Driver Dies After Hitting Guardrail On SR 64: FHP

A 21-year-old driver is dead, his passenger critically injured, after their SUV hit a guardrail on SR 64 early Saturday, FHP said.

MYAKKA CITY, FL — A 21-year-old Myakka City man has died after the SUV he was driving crashed into a guardrail on State Road 64 early Saturday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

His passenger, a 20-year-old man also from Myakka City, was critically injured in the crash, FHP said.

Around 4:15 a.m., the driver was traveling east on S.R. 64 near the intersection of Verna Bethany Road in Myakka City. After driving onto the south side grass shoulder, the driver over corrected into the travel lane, hitting the north side guardrail, FHP said. The SUV overturned and landed in a ditch on the north side of the road.

The driver was ejected from the SUV onto the westbound lane of S.R. 64. He was pronounced dead on the scene, FHP said.

His passenger was brought to Tampa General Hospital, where he’s in critical condition. The crash remains under investigation.
