Update: Samurai Sword-Wielding Man Shot, Killed by Cop
A domestic dispute between a mother and her son in Bradenton turned violent Thursday.

Update Aug. 29, 3:46 p.m.: The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the deputy involved in Thursday’s fatal shooting. Sgt. Brady McCabe pulled the trigger that resulted in Terry Sellars’ death, according to the Bradenton Herald. McCabe is on paid leave while the incident is investigated.

A 31-year-old Bradenton man is dead after Manatee County deputies say he charged them with a “samurai-type sword” Thursday morning.

The incident began around 8 a.m. when deputies rolled up to a convenience store on 33rd Street East after receiving a call from a woman who said her son held her against her will and battered her, a sheriff’s office media release said. The woman escaped and drove to the store for help.
When deputies went to speak with the son at 3255 58th Ave. E. home, they say he came out of the home, armed with a sword. The man “charged towards one of the deputies in a threatening manner,” the release said.

A deputy fired and killed Terry Sellars Jr., 31. The shooting is now under investigation.
Sellars had been arrested multiple times in the past on charges including battery and robbery, according to Manatee County Jail records.
