State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) American Government instructor Mike “Mig” Gallagher recently published his second novel, “California Rifles: the Major, the Marshal, and la Mujer." The work of historical fiction is available online through Amazon.

Gallagher describes this historical fiction piece as featuring strong Irish-American, African-American, and female fictional characters. President Lincoln tasks the two protagonists to investigate stolen Union rifles. The protagonists run into a mysterious woman that complicates their investigation. You will also encounter pirates, scoundrels, and knights, as you follow Roarke and his companions through this American Civil War era adventure.

He says, “You will set the book down wondering, ‘How many times can two men and a woman be shot at, conked out, or just generally jumbled up?’” The novel's fictional Deputy U.S. Marshal was inspired by the actual first black Deputy Marshal - the extraordinary Bass Reeves.
