SCF, Manatee-Sarasota Collects More Than 60 Uniforms for Upcoming Exhibit

Curators have gathered more than 60 uniforms for the coming exhibit: Art of the Costume: Working Women in Uniform.

The Fine Art Gallery at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) is being transformed to honor working women. Curators have gathered more than 60 uniforms for the coming exhibit: Art of the Costume: Working Women in Uniform. The exhibit opens with a reception 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 26, which is National Women’s Equity Day, at SCF’s Fine Art Gallery, Building 11 at SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W.

This will be SCF’s fourth costume exhibit devoted to the art of the costume, showcasing the collaborative efforts of the SCF Fine Art Gallery, SCF Theatre Program, local organizations and private individuals. The department of Art, Design, Humanities is joining this year’s effort.

“Art of the Costume: Working Women in Uniform,” honors women in the workplace by showcasing the fashions that have influenced current trends. The exhibit will offer a survey of uniforms worn by women in different professions through the decades to include traditional, nontraditional and cultural uniform attire from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. SCF is pleased to present this exhibit in the hope that it will add to the richness and diversity of our College and community.

Many of the uniforms have been worn by women living in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Kenneth Erickson, former SCF Theatre Program Director, met with several of the contributors to gather uniforms. He was able to collect an interesting variety, from the circus and movies to tobacco rollers and Red Cross nurses to, of course, military uniforms.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. For information contact Joseph Loccisano, gallery director, at loccisj@scf.edu or (941) 752-5225.
