SCF Theatre Students Garner Awards

The State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) chapter of Delta Psi Omega, the national theatre honorary fraternity for community colleges, recognized eight theatre students during the 51st Annual Awards Banquet at the David S. and Anne V. Howard Studio Theatre.

Nick Catanzaro, Rosie Messina-Adam and Melanie Waters were named Outstanding Lead Actor, Lead Actress and Supporting Actress for their roles in “Angel Street.” Anthony Hartmann was named Outstanding Supporting Actor for “She Kills Monsters,” and Samuel Echevarria, Jr. and Vanessa Panelli received Outstanding Ensemble awards for their multiple roles in “By the Numbers.” Also honored were Roxanne Smith and Catanzaro for Outstanding Technical Achievement and Messina-Adam as Most Promising Newcomer. Inducted into Delta Psi Omega were Debbie Echevarria, Emily Marrero, Echevarria Jr., Hartmann, Panelli and Waters.

Craig Smith, theatre program manager, and James Thaggard, box office manager, served as co-hosts of the “Bernie Awards” banquet at SCF Bradenton. The “Bernie Awards” were named in honor of former theatre professor M. Bernice Pepke, who passed away in 2010. Other presenters included retired theatre program managers John W. James and Kenneth Erickson, guest directors Amanda Schlachter and David Nields, and instructional assistant Timothy Bourn. The “Bernie” Awards were named in honor of former theatre professor, M. Also attending the ceremony were Dr. Carol Probstfeld, SCF president; Gary Russell, vice president of academic affairs; and Mike Kiefer, dean of academic affairs.
