Sheepshead Spawning Around Passes

Anglers have many targets with rising water temperatures, and sheepshead congregating around passes this week are just one of them.

Capt. Scott Moore said to look for sheepshead to congregate around passes during their spawn this week.

“It's going to take a while for the Gulf waters to get warmer,” Moore said. “So that water coming into the bays will keep it cooler around the passes. That's good for sheepshead to go off and start spawning on the next moon.”

Moore said now that bay water temperatures have ranged between 68 and 72 degrees, it's a great time for top-water fishing.

Also, Moore reported he has success on trout with a MirrOlure Provoker in clear glitter. “They were just tearing that jig up,” Moore said.

Spanish mackerel also have stormed the bays and are abundant at the Skyway fishing piers.

Finally, pompano have showed up from Terra Ceia Bay to Sarasota Bay.

Sarasota kayak fishing guide Steve Gibson reported catching pompano this week.

He also fished the upper Manatee River with lightweight fly rods for 25 to 30 bluegill and about six bass on poppers and Gibson's Myakka Minnow.
