Southeast High Principal Resigns

The resignation follows an internal review by the school district.

Catherine Smith, Southeast High School principal since 2010, abruptly resigned Tuesday after being placed on leave following a district investigation.

Smith was on paid administrative after an internal review by the Manatee County School District’s Office of Professional Standards, according to the Manatee School Board, which issued a written statement Tuesday.

By statute, the results of the investigation cannot be released by the school district until Aug. 24, according to the statement issued by the Manatee School Board.

Shane Hall, assistant principal, will act as interim principal until a replacement is named, according to media reports.

Southeast High has nearly 1,400 students. It is a high-performing school named one of America's best public high schools by Newsweek magazine in 2010.
