State College of Florida Nursing Team Presents Webinar on Online Curriculum

Katie Tinley, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, CNE, director of BSN curriculum and instruction at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF), and Diana Pitcher, Ph.D., DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, CCRN, an RN-BSN nursing adjunct instructor at SCF, presented the webinar “Navigating the Shift: Implementing the 2025 Johns Hopkins EBP Model into an Online RN-BSN Curriculum” in August. The Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing (IJHN) hosted the event.

More than 80 people attended the webinar, where they learned how Tinley and her team incorporated the new framework into SCF’s curriculum in Fall 2025. Tinley and Pitcher wrote the course content and have taught it to students. The webinar covered course design approaches, learning activities, student interaction strategies, assessment strategies and lessons learned. Incorporating the updated model helps prepare SCF nursing students to apply current evidence-based practices in patient care.

Since the updated model represented a significant shift from the previous model, Tinley and her team collaborated with colleagues to review resources, deepen their understanding of the changes and develop a practice-focused course. Collaborators included SCF library staff, IJHN representatives and Jen Bonamer, Ph.D., an SCF nursing adjunct instructor and a nursing professional development research specialist in the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.

“I appreciated the invitation from the Institute for Johns Hopkins Nursing to offer this webinar and share our innovative approaches to teaching evidence-based practice,” said Tinley. “I was excited to share how we engage students with this content in the online learning environment and how we collaborate with community partners to better understand their expectations for BSN-prepared nurses in applying evidence-based practice. Students are learning best practices at the bedside and why we do things the way we do them.”

Tinley has been teaching nursing students since 2017. In addition to her academic leadership role at SCF, she practices as a family nurse practitioner specializing in infectious diseases, bringing current clinical perspectives to nursing education. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and the ACUE Effective Teaching Framework certification and is a former commissioned officer of the United States Coast Guard.

Pitcher is a nurse educator with more than 35 years of experience in registered nursing, bachelor’s degree, nurse anesthesia and advanced practice nursing programs. She practices as a registered nurse in a cardiovascular intensive care unit and as a nurse practitioner providing postoperative care with an anesthesia group. In addition to her teaching role at SCF, she works as an adjunct instructor for Memorial Healthcare System, Envision Health and the University of South Florida Graduate Program. She holds Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees and the ACUE Effective Teaching Framework certification.
