Unknown Amount Of Sewage Discharged Into Manatee River: Organization

BRADENTON, FL — Raw and partially treated sewage is being intentionally discharged into the Manatee River at Bradenton’s water reclamation facility, Suncoast Waterkeeperwrote Thursday in a Facebook post.

The organization is dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Florida Suncoast’s waterways.

While the city hasn’t disclosed the total amount of the discharge, so far, the bypass is “greater than 1,000” gallons, according to a report the city filed with the state on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the city discharged about 25 gallons of wastewater into the riverduring and after then-Tropical Storm Debby’s brush with Florida’s west coast, the Anna Maria Island Sun reported.

Water samples are being taken from the river, the report said.

DeSoto Memorial Park, which is on the river, will be added to the Suncoast Waterkeeper’s weekly water quality testing sites, the organization wrote in its post.

In the meantime, the organization has issued “a no-swim advisory until further notice” for the river.
