Video: Man's Jail Break-In An Epic Fail, Deputies Say

The Florida man reportedly told officials he just wanted to visit some friends on the inside.

VERO BEACH, FL – It’s not uncommon for inmates to try to break out of jail, but break ins aren’t an everyday occurrence.

Indian River County deputies say Patrick Rempe must not have gotten that memo.

The 24-year-old Vero Beach man is accused of ramming his 2002 Toyota into the front doors of the county jail Monday night. While the glass on the doors shattered after the strike, the doors maintained their integrity, the sheriff’s office reported in a media release.

After the ramming failed to get him inside, Rempe is accused of crashing into a fence outside the building and then trying to climb up that fence.

That’s when things became worse for the man, who later told deputies he just wanted to visit with friends on the inside.

It seems he “became entangled in the razor wire,” the sheriff’s office reported. That entanglement was so bad, emergency medical crews had to be called out to remove Rempe from the fence, the sheriff’s office noted.

Unhappy with the break-in’s thwarting, Rempe is also accused of spitting on a deputy after he was disentangled from the wire.

The sheriff’s office said Rempe told deputies he was “high on Flakka.”

“This is what drugs do to you,” Sheriff Deryl Loar said following the incident. “Flakka is poisoning our youth. Fortunately, none of our deputies were injured and our facility wasn’t compromised.”

Rempe was being held under supervision at a local hospital Tuesday. He suffered injuries related to the crash and the subsequent razor wire entanglement, the sheriff’s office said.

Once Rempe is out of the hospital, he’ll probably get to visit those friends, the sheriff’s office noted. He faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, three counts of felony criminal mischief and possibly other charges, the sheriff’s office noted.

Flakka is a synthetic drug that produces a high similar to cocaine. It is considered more dangerous than cocaine, however, because it is more difficult to control the dosing, experts say.

“Just a little bit of difference in how much is consumed can be the difference between getting high and dying,” CNN quoted Jim Hall, a drug abuse epidemiologist from Nova Southeastern University, as saying.

Flakka contains a chemical ingredient that is similar to the chemicals found in “bath salts.” The drug has been traced to a number of overdoses, deaths and unusual occurrences, such as Monday’s attempted jail break in.
