Armed Robber Shot by Tampa Police Officer Dies

The Tampa Police Department announced Thursday that John Carr Jr. died Oct. 22.

The 20-year-old Palm River area man shot by a Tampa Police officer Oct. 12 died Wednesday from his injuries.

In an email to media, Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said John Carr Jr. was removed from life support at Tampa General Hospital around 5:51 a.m.

Carr was shot by Officer Ronald Neipert, 29, after police say he robbed two people at gunpoint and fired on the officer. Neipert is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

Neipert is a six-year patrol veteran. Prior to that, he worked two years as a dispatcher and two years as a Community Service Officer.

The shooting in question occurred at the Tampa Park Apartments, 1015 Lily White Court. Police received a 911 call about an armed robbery around 1 a.m. Oct. 12. When Neipert arrived, the robbery suspect fired on him twice.

Neipert shot the man at least once, police said in an email to media.

Carr was on probation for an October 2011 armed robbery. He was released from prison on Sept. 25, 2013.
