Florida Gov. Rick Scott Says 'Stop Trump' Efforts Must End

The Sunshine State's governor is calling on Republicans to back the nominee apparent.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — After Donald Trump’s five-state sweep Tuesday night, the writing is on the wall the that the “Stop Trump” movement has been derailed. At least that’s the take of Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

Scott issued a plea to Republicans on Wednesday, asking them to cease efforts to derail Trump’s campaign.

“Yesterday’s election results show that the anti-Trump efforts didn’t work,” Scott wrote on his Facebook page. “Republicans now need to come together. Donald Trump is going to be our nominee, and he is going to be on the ballot as the Republican candidate for President.”

While Republican leaders in Washington may not have selected Trump as their candidate, Scott contends “Republican voters across America did choose him.”

Indeed, Trump took primary victories Tuesday in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island and Delaware. That was after big wins in Florida and New York.

“If the anti-Trump groups don’t stop now, their efforts will be nothing more than a contribution to the Clinton campaign,” Scott argued. “The damage that President Obama has done to our country is serious and substantial. We cannot afford another four years of liberal incompetence, and that is exactly what Hillary Clinton would bring.”

As of Wednesday, Trump had 954 of the 1,237 delegates he needs to win the Republican nomination. Sen. Ted Cruz trailed with 562 delegates. Meanwhile, Ohio Gov. John Kaisch is at the bottom of the pack with 153. Floridians Sen. Marco Rubio and former Gov. Jeb Bush both pulled out of the race after a series of crushing primary defeats. Bush made his exit prior to the Florida Primary, but Rubio stuck around until the results came in that evening.

This is the second time Scott has called on Republicans to stop inside bickering and back the nominee apparent in the race. The first time came after Trump’s victory in the Sunshine State. Scott, however, has stopped short of issuing a formal endorsement of the New York businessman. Some have speculated Scott might be a vice presidential pick if Trump earns the nomination. That speculation has not been confirmed by Trump or Scott.
