Racial tensions that erupted in the wake of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s 2012 death fall squarely on the shoulders of America’s Commander in Chief.
That’s the contention of George Zimmerman, according to statements made in the former Florida neighborhood watch volunteer’s first interview following the U.S. Justice Department’s February decision to not pursue civil rights charges against him.

Zimmerman, in a video released by his law firm, referenced Obama’s 2012 Rose Garden speech where the president stated if he had a son “he’d look like Trayvon.”
“To me that was clearly a dereliction of duty, pitting Americans against each other solely based on race,” Zimmerman stated in the interview.

Zimmerman went on to say the president continues to stoke the fires, most recently inviting the Martin and Fulton families to the White House to reflect on how all children’s lives matter.
“Unfortunately for the president, I’m also my parent’s child and my life matters as well,” Zimmerman said. “And for him to make incendiary comments as he did and direct the Department of Justice to pursue a baseless prosecution he by far overstretched, overreached, even broke the law in certain aspects to where you have an innocent American being prosecuted by the federal government.”
The Justice Department cited “ insufficient evidence” for its recent decision against pursuing civil rights charges against Zimmerman, USA Today reported. Attorney General Eric Holder was quoted by the paper as saying the evidence collected failed to meet the “high standard for a federal hate crime prosecution.”
Zimmerman was acquitted on second-degree murder charges back in 2013, but the potential for federal charges lingered until recently. Since his acquittal, Zimmerman has made headlines on numerous occasions related to domestic problems and a highly publicized road rage incident.
The 2013 acquittal sparked a number of protests around the country.
