Men Used Internet to Find Home Invasion, Sexual Assault Victims

Two Brandon area men were arrested Tuesday following two recent robberies and sexual assaults.

Two men wanted in connection with two recent robbery home invasions and sexual assaults are behind bars after Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies tracked them down late Tuesday thanks to surveillance video and pawn shop receipts.

Both cases occurred this week and involved victims that the men met on the website Backpage.com, according to an email from sheriff’s office spokeswoman Debbie Carter. The woman in both cases are described as escorts who agreed to dates with their alleged attackers.

The first case took place Sunday when a 20-year-old woman agreed to a “date” at her home. The woman heard a knock at the door around 2:50 p.m., and thinking it was her roommate, opened the door, Carter wrote.

Instead of her roommate, a man with a “large semi-automatic handgun” was standing at the door. He pointed the gun at the woman’s head and forced her back inside, where he proceeded to force her to have sex, Carter said.

The man then demanded money and took off with two PlayStation 3 consoles, a laptop computer and some video games. He got into a 2000 Ford Escort driven by the second man arrested and took off.

Deputies later discovered the men sold the stolen items at a local Game Stop.

The second attack happened Tuesday. This time a 31-year-old woman was attacked in a similar manner to the first. The man who entered the home was armed, forced her to have sex and then stole the victim’s cell phone, Carter said.

The men were tracked down late Tuesday due to the vehicle description, surveillance video taken near one of the victim’s homes and pawn receipts, Carter said.

Sgt. Michael Hurley arrested one of the men around 11 p.m. Tuesday at the Shell station on Falkenburg Road and State Road 60. The second was arrested at the Red Roof Inn on State Road 60. During questioning, Carter said, both men admitted to committing the crimes.
