Riverview Man Turns Himself In For Death Of Brandon Bicyclist

A 44-year-old Riverview man turned himself into the sheriff's Office Friday, Oct. 5 in connection with a fatal hit-and-run in Brandon.

BRANDON, FL -- A 44-year-old Riverview man turned himself into the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Friday, Oct. 5 in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident involving a Brandon bicyclist on Sept. 23.

Richard George Sheldon Jr. turned himself in a day after the sheriff's office obtained a warrant for his arrest for the accident that killed John Dilgard, 73.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Dilgard was riding a yellow Duna mountain bike south on Kings Avenue near the intersection of Calm Drive at 12:42 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a vehicle that fled the scene of the accident (see related story).

Dilgard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheldon has been charged with DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash with a death and DUI with property damage or personal injury. He was released from jail after posting bond on Friday.
