100 Clearwater Seniors Adopting 100 Robo-Pets

Clearwater Florida will soon become home to the next generation of household pets. These companions don’t require food, water, or potty training because despite their cuddly exterior, they’re fully robotic. The robo-pets are to serve as companions and enrichment for seniors in the South Florida community, without requiring the responsibility of caring for a live animal.

The event on Tuesday is an extension of a pilot program started at the Volunteers of America’s Clear Bay and Creekside residential facilities, where up to 100 companion pets will be deployed to support seniors’ mental and emotional health. The robotic house pets respond to touch and sound, and yet are not powered by AI, a design choice that ensures the pets are easy to use, easy to trust, and fun to engage with.

But why robot pets, and why now? VOA researchers found that the distaste seniors have for technology stems from more than just a rejection of innovation. Rather, seniors expressed negativity towards devices that felt medical, invasive, or overly complicated. Residents at these facilities embraced devices like fall-detecting smartwatches or companion robots, which demonstrates a demand for tools that felt simple, discreet, and human.

Some seniors are having difficulty learning new tools, have concerns about privacy and surveillance, and many are dealing with a lack of ongoing human support. Many older participants told researchers they were without smartphones or tablets capable of running apps, while several others shared personal stories of falls, isolation, and struggling to reach help. Lack of access to technology in any form is detrimental to the health of seniors and can expand the chasm between how they suffer and how they find help.

Clearwater Florida’s special adoption day demonstrates that meaningful assistance can be given to seniors without compromising their dignity or comfort. So, although the robotic pet rollout is in early stages, the message is resoundingly clear; seniors don’t want to be treated like patients, and simple companionship can go a long way.
