CLEARWATER, FL — A 2-year-old Clearwater girl remains in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa after police said the toddler suffered multiple broken bones that weren't treated for a week, according to a news release from the Clearwater Police Department.

The girl's mother, Cheyenne Gray, 20, and the mother's boyfriend, Cameron Taylor, 21, were charged Wednesday with multiple counts of child abuse in connection with the girl's injuries, police said.

Taylor told investigators he was caring for the little girl more than a week ago when she fell off the toilet and hit her face on the bathtub.

In a separated incident, he said she was sitting between his legs and fell face first onto the floor, according to the news release.

Neither Taylor nor Gray sought immediate medical attention for the girl. Gray told officers she was afraid the girl's injuries would make her appear to be an abusive mother.
