20 Kilos of Coke, 20 Pounds of Pot Wash Ashore on Florida Beaches

The discoveries were made on two consecutive days in Volusia County.

It wasn’t mundane messages inside bottles that washed up on two Volusia County beaches over the past few days.

Deputies there say beach patrol officers discovered 20 kilos of cocaine washed up on New Smyrna Beach Thursday. That discovery was followed up on Friday when 20 pounds of marijuana washed up on Daytona Beach.

In both cases, the drugs were turned over to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, who will notify the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency of the finds. Chances are, however, that the drugs will simply be destroyed and those who possessed them never found, said Gary Davidson, spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Having drugs wash up on Florida beaches isn’t an everyday occurrence, Davidson said. Even so, it’s not unheard of.

“Normally, it’s impossible to trace,” he said. This batch of drugs appears to be fairly old, Davidson added. Some of the bags containing the drugs had barnacles growing on them.

It’s unclear if the two finds are connected.
