13-Foot Alligator Killed Near Spot Where Body Seen In Canal: Pinellas Officials

The gator was killed during an investigation into a body in the water, said officials. The victim was identified as a 41-year-old woman.

LARGO, FL — A woman's body was pulled from a waterway in Largo and officials killed a more than 13-foot alligator seen swimming nearby on Friday, said the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the report of a body seen in the waterway near the area of 134th Avenue North and 121st Street North in unincorporated Largo, at 1:50 p.m. on Sept. 22.

During the investigation, officials said a 13-foot, 8.5-inch alligator was "humanely killed" and removed from the waterway, with help from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The PCSO Dive Team also recovered the remains of a deceased adult, identified as 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham, said officials.

The manner and cause of Peckham's death have not been determined, per the Medical Examiner's Office. Officials have not yet released any more information about the incident, or how the alligator was involved.
