Suncoast Hospice Celebrates Pinellas Centenarians

Twenty-one Pinellas County residents ages 100-107 gathered May 2 at the Clearwater community center to celebrate the fourth annual Celebrating Life: A 100th Birthday Party. In addition to the centenarians, there were many “almost centenarians” 95-99 year olds and  guests who joined in the fun.

Local radio personality and longtime supporter of Suncoast Hospice Ann Kelly served as host. She talked to each centenarian asking them a variety of questions including what the secret of their longevity was, where they grew up, where they met their spouse and what makes them smile every day.

Some of the secrets to longevity included:

  • “Being happy all the time and not being afraid of hard work.” – Mary (100)
  • “Never feeling sorry for yourself.” – Beatrice (100)
  • “Lots of good friends and family.” – Ilis (100)
  • “Making others happy.” – Geneva (100)
  • “Staying active.” – Alice (100) (Current Suncoast Hospice volunteer.)

Suncoast Hospice President & CEO Rafael Sciullo welcomed guests and read a letter from Florida Governor Rick Scott. Ivan, Sciullo’s therapy dog, also joined in the fun by greeting guests and having his picture taken with many of them while donning a special birthday hat.
