Antonio Velardo with the latest Je Suis Charlie

The 87-year-old French creator of comic book legend Asterix has paid tribute to the victims of the Charlie Hebdo shootings.

Albert Uderzo come out of retirement to show solidarity with the satirical cartoonists murdered on Wednesday.

He created two new drawings of his iconic pint-sized action hero, one shows Asterix shouting “Moi aussi je suis un Charlie” - which translates as “I too am a Charlie.”

The drawing also shows the French character having punched a terrorist up towards the sky.

Another picture shows a sad looking Asterix and his sidekick Obelix, both paying their respects, having taken their hats off and laying a rose on the ground.
