Breastfeeding Moms Stage Nurse-In at Florida Mall

The Thursday afternoon protest drew about 100 nursing mothers.

When Kristie Quinones was asked to cover up or leave Aventura Mall a few days ago, the breastfeeding mother hit social media channels to share her side of the story.

That story grew and before she knew it, enough support for her right to breastfeed in public had been generated to stage a peaceful protest. On Thursday, that protest took place with some 100 mothers all taking part in the “nurse-in,” according to NBC Miami.

“I lifted up my top, I switched her underneath, so she could latch on, and she began nursing, and after a few minutes, the playground attendant came up to me, and she advised me that I could not stay unless I covered up with a blanket,” Quinones told FOX News about the incident that started it all.

As it turns out, August is National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Florida state law also happens to allow women to breastfeed in public, covered or not.

For its part, the mall apologized.

“Aventura Mall is committed to promoting a better understanding of social causes and supports mothers who breastfeed,” its management said in a statement, according to NBC.
