Man in 12-Hour Clearwater Standoff Identified

He is hospitalized with several gunshot wounds.

The Clearwater Police Department has identified the man involved in the 12-hour standoff on Carroll Street.

Police say Frederick Nelson, 43, was taken out of the home at 1524 Carroll St. Wednesday evening after a lengthy standoff. Nelson, an email from police spokesman Rob Shaw stated, suffers from mental health-related issues and has had previous contacts with law enforcement.

Nelson was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg following the standoff. Shaw said he was suffering from “multiple gunshot wounds.” His condition is not readily available.

The email said that on two occasions during the standoff, Nelson, who barricaded himself in his bedroom under cinder blocks, doors and other debris, pointed his weapon at or fired upon Clearwater officers.

“Two police officers fired at the suspect on those two different occasions,” the email said. “Those two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in such matters while a review is conducted.”

The standoff came to an end when entry was made into the house by the SWAT team with assistance of an armored rescue vehicle supplied by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the email said. The vehicle was able to breach a wall to gain access to Nelson so that “lifesaving efforts could immediately take place.”

Police used a variety of methods throughout the day to try to get the suspect to come out of the house, Shaw said. None of those attempts were successful.

No officers were injured by Nelson during the standoff, but Shaw said several officers suffered heat-related issues and had to be treated by paramedics as a result.

The incident began shortly after 6:30 a.m. when the police department received a call saying Nelson had threatened a female relative inside the home. Police were able to get the woman safely outside, but Nelson remained within.

Several nearby homes were also evacuated during the incident.
