New Pinellas County Administrator Begins Duties
Following back-and-forth negotiations over a final salary package, Barry A. Burton began work this week as Pinellas County's administrator.

PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -- Following back-and-forth negotiations over a final salary package, Barry A. Burton began work this week as Pinellas County's new administrator.
The new administrator will be paid $289,700 a year for overseeing the county government operations. This includes a base salary of $267,500 and $22,000 for deferred compensation and a car allowance.
Burton originally requested a salary package of $302,100, $50,000 more than what retiring administrator Mark Woodard earned.

Woodward declined an employment contract, deferred compensation and a car allowance because other employees could not earn those perks.
Burton was selected following a nationwide search.

The Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners selected Burton after a nationwide search.
“Mr. Burton brings decades of leadership and accomplishments in county government administration,” said Commission Chairman Kenneth T. Welch. “We look forward to his leadership and contributions as we continue to set the standard for public service.”
Burton has worked in county government for more than 30 years, serving in various county administration, budget and environmental administration roles throughout his tenure. Prior to joining Pinellas County, he served as county administrator for Lake County, Illinois, for 16 years.
Burton graduated with a bachelor of science degree in urban administration from the University of Cincinnati, followed by a master's of public administration degree from Northern Kentucky University. He is a retired infantry officer from the U.S. Army Reserve/National Guard and is a credentialed manager through the International City/County Management Association.
He said he's looking forward to his new duties in Pinellas County.
