'Stingray Shuffle' Recommended on Area Beaches
The warm weather has caused the critters to stick around longer than normal.

Beachgoers in the Clearwater area are being warned to keep their eyes open and their feet prepared to dance to avoid painful encounters with stingrays.
The Clearwater Beach Patrol says the critters are sticking around longer this year due to the warm weather. A handful of stings are being reported daily, the patrol reported in an email to media.
“It is important for all beachgoers to do the ‘stingray shuffle’ when entering beach waters,” the email recommended. “By shuffling your feet in the sand, you will scare off any stingrays that might be around.”

The beach patrol uses purple warning flags to alert swimmers when rays have been spotted. They’re being flown as needed right now, the patrol said.
Anyone who is injured by a stingray should check in with a lifeguard or go to Fire Station No. 46 at 534 Mandalay Ave. for help. Swimmers who are injured and check in with a lifeguard will be taken to that fire station for treatment and monitoring if necessary.
