The thief that targeted a white Ford Mustang convertible from a Clearwater apartment complex Monday night likely got quite a surprise.

Sound asleep in the back was a 6-year-old boy who had been left inside while his mother ran into an apartment in the King James complex for a moment around 10:50 p.m.

Before the mother could return, however, her rental car was stolen, right along with her son, Theron Fields.

The Clearwater Police Department quickly launched a search for both the boy and the car, an email to media from the department stated.

That search ended happily when police discovered the car and the boy just about an hour later, two miles away. The vehicle was found abandoned at 1419 E. Leo Lane. He was still asleep in the back of the locked car, which had been backed into a parking space at another apartment complex.

The boy’s mother, Elizabeth Rivera, and her son were quickly reunited.

So far, no arrests have been made in the case. The investigation continues.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Clearwater Police Department at 727-562-4242.
