The 1993 World Trade Center bombing, as we remember it 30 years later.

It was a typical Friday morning in New York City 30 years ago today, February 26th, 1993. But then at 12:17 pm, a truck bomb, parked by Ramzi Yousef and Eyad Ismoil, detonated in the basement parking garage of the World Trade Center. Both towers swayed visibly, some say the upper floors swayed by as much as 30 feet, when that bomb detonated. Smoke immediately filled the stairwells of both towers, complicating evacuations and causing smoke inhalation. Six floors of the underground parking garage were destroyed by the blast, and six people were killed, including a pregnant woman. Power was knocked out to both towers, causing elevators to stop and making the stairwells completely black to where nobody could see a thing.

The motive of Ramzi Yousef and Eyad Ismoil was to send the north tower toppling into the south tower, causing a domino effect that would have taken down both towers and also over a dozen other buildings, some of them highrises, to the south of the World Trade Center, potentially bringing devastation as far south as the northern edge of Battery Park.

And like all other terrorists, Ramzi Yousef and Eyad Ismoil were both single guys. Neither of them had a girlfriend nor a wife. Neither of them had children.

They were the exact kinds of guys that went alone to bars, clubs, restaurants, street fairs and events, and music festivals.

They were the exact kinds of guys that tried to "join in" on other people at bars, clubs, and street events and festivals.

And they were the exact kinds of guys that asked someone for a ride somewhere.
